Sunderland throw hat in the ring to hijack blockbuster signing, it’ll be new club record
Sunderland are showing no signs of slowing down their ambition in the transfer market.
Sunderland spent big in the summer to bring the likes of Chemsdine Talbi, Simon Adingra, Nordi Mukiele, and Habib Diarra to the Stadium of Light.
It was a recruitment strategy that has yielded excellent returns in the first half of the season, with Sunderland seventh in the Premier League despite drawing 1-1 with Leeds United last time out.
Sunderland have been linked with a plethora of players in the January transfer window as Regis Le Bris looks to mastermind a European finish in the Premier League come May.
And now it appears as though the Black Cats could splash out on a club-record deal to boost their squad in January.
Sunderland could beat club-record fee they forked out for Habib Diarra
Sunderland agreed a £30.3million deal to sign Diarra from Strasbourg back in the summer window and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus looks set to open his chequebook again this window.
Indeed, the print edition of the Daily Mail has reported that the Black Cats want to hijack Crystal Palace’s move for Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson.
With the Eagles having agreed a reported £35m fee with Spurs already, it stands to reason that Sunderland would have to at least match that sum to broker a deal.
Interest in the 24-year-old Wales international is thought to be high, with Aston Villa, Everton, and Bournemouth also having been linked to the former Nottingham Forest ace.
One difficulty for Sunderland, though, is the fact that the Mail reports that Johnson may opt not to leave Tottenham at all in January.
Who could leave Sunderland this transfer window?
Black Cats supporters will, naturally, be excited about any potential incomings at the Stadium of Light in the next month.
But it stands to reason that with so much squad overhaul over the past six months or so that there will be players Sunderland are looking to shift off the books too.
- Sunderland’s top five most expensive signings were all, technically, made this summer
- Enzo Le Fee joined on loan in January but his full transfer from Roma was completed in the last window
- Any move for Johnson would see him become Sunderland’s most expensive signing
And, according to the Mail report, there is quite a lengthy list the Mackems could look to shift on to free up room in the squad.
Anthony Patterson, Luke O’Nien, and Dan Neil are all reportedly drawing interest, while Ian Poveda, Aji Alese, Joe Anderson, Timothee Pembele, Adboullah Ba, Leo Hjelde, Ahmed Abdullahi, and Ben Middlemas all said to surplus to requirements.
Essentially, it promises to be a hugely busy month at the Stadium of Light in the next few weeks.
