Sunderland summer signings rated – 3/10 disappointing, 10/10 simply stunning
Sunderland have signed 15 new players this summer.
Deadline day threw up plenty of surprises for Sunderland, with three new arrivals and several exits.
Patrick Roberts joined Birmingham on loan, while a handful of other fringe players were afforded a move away for the campaign.
With that said, optimism levels are through the roof at the Stadium of Light as a result of the summer business as a whole, as Mackem News ranks the signings made throughout the window.

Sunderland’s defensive overhaul
Concerns were raised over Sunderland’s defensive options this summer, though they have certainly been addressed.
Six new arrivals have checked in at the Stadium of Light to rectify that weakness, with all but one of them having already impressed.
Player | Signed from | Rating |
Lutsharel Geertruia | Leipzig | N/A |
Robin Roefs | Nijmagen | 9 |
Reinildo | Atletico Madrid | 9 |
Nordi Mukiele | PSG | 8 |
Omar Alderete | Getafe | 8 |
Arthur Masuaku | Besiktas | 7 |
Nordi Mukiele shone against Brentford, while Omar Alderete registered an assist on his debut in the opening day victory against West Ham.
From the goalkeeping perspective, Robin Roefs has already surpassed expectations, especially after his penalty save in the win against Brentford.
Reinildo has subdued fears over his technical ability at Sunderland already, and having signed on a free, it looks to be an excellent piece of business, with Arthur Masuaku to cover for him.
After signing on deadline day, Sunderland fans will be excited to see what Lutsharel Geertruida can bring to Wearside.

Granit Xhaka leads midfield transformation
Sunderland set their sights on a new midfield this summer, and it has comfortably been the most successful part of their window.
Granit Xhaka has already impressed at the Stadium of Light, with Enzo Le Fee making a claim for his place in the starting 11 last time out.
Player | Signed from | Rating |
Granit Xhaka | Leverkusen | 10 |
Habib Diarra | Strasbourg | 9 |
Noah Sadiki | Saint-Gilloise | 9 |
Enzo Le Fee | Roma | 8 |
Sunderland’s club-record arrival Habib Diarra has shown plenty of promise, while Regis Le Bris has his own N’Golo Kante in the final arrival.
That being Noah Sadiki, who has already cemented his place as a hero at Sunderland, and long may that continue.

Sunderland seal two deadline day arrivals to bolster attack
Simon Adingra and Chemsdine Talbi were two of the first arrivals at Sunderland, with a total of five attacking signings made this summer.
Albeit Marc Guiu returned to Chelsea on deadline day, resulting in somewhat of a failed transfer move, despite his goal every 103 minutes ratio.
After arriving with such high hopes, the situation was a massive disappointment, though it worked out fairly well in the end.
Player | Signed from | Rating |
Brian Brobbey | Ajax | N/A |
Bertrand Traore | Ajax | N/A |
Simon Adingra | Brighton | 8 |
Chemsdine Talbi | Club Brugge | 6 |
Marc Guiu | Chelsea | 3 |
On Monday, Sunderland moved fast to secure the signing of Brian Brobbey to replace Guiu, and based on his previous record, it seems to be a coup.
He wasn’t the only attacking arrival on deadline day, with Bertrand Traore also moving to the Stadium of Light on a one-year deal from Ajax.
