‘Sunderland strike again’ as Moloney arrives on short-term deal

Sunderland Women have been active this summer as they look to continue their progress up the football pyramid.

The Black Cats finished 7th in the Women’s Championship last season, 13 points behind title winners London City Lionesses.

With Newcastle United now in the league after their rapid rise, Sunderland need investment in order to stay ahead of their local rivals and challenge for promotion next season.

After signing both Rhiannon Roberts and Reanna Blades earlier this window, Sunderland have struck again.

Moloney signs for Sunderland on one-year deal

Sunderland have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Grace Moloney.

Moloney, 32, has signed a one-year deal on Wearside after her contract at London City expired, with the Black Cats having the option of an extra year.

The Ireland international has experience of playing in the Women’s Super League with Reading, making 125 appearances across 14 years.

Speaking to Sunderland’s website after the deal was confirmed on Friday (11 July), Moloney said: “I’m delighted to sign for Sunderland.

“I can’t wait to meet the staff, my teammates and the supporters, and I’m looking forward to getting started with this great club.”

Head Coach Mel Reay said: “We are delighted to secure Grace’s signature and bring her north to Sunderland.

“She is an experienced goalkeeper, who has played at the highest level in Club football, and we receive her straight from the Republic of Ireland senior squad that has just toured the United States.

“She is ready to go and we’re looking forward to supporting her, as she settles on Wearside.”

Sunderland can progress with investment

Sunderland have made their strategy this summer to sign free agents on short-term deals.

Moloney, Roberts and Blades were all released at the end of last season, providing the Black Cats with a great depth of options.

If Sunderland want to progress further, however, then investment from Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is required.

Defence was the biggest issue last season, with the Wearsiders having the fourth-worst backline in the division.

Sunderland have addressed this with the signings of Moloney and Roberts, but a big name could push the side over the top.
