Sunderland star ranks among Premier League elite, but more needed from teammates

Wilson Isidor has been a great addition for Sunderland, having already netted four Premier League goals this term.

Sunderland signed Isidor on a permanent transfer in February after he initially joined on loan from Zenit St Petersburg.

Wilson Isidor outperforming key attacking metric

For most fans, Isidor’s best performance this season came during Sunderland’s shock 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old was everywhere:

Furthermore, just one of his 18 touches was unsuccessful, while he was fouled once, according to Sofascore.

Isidor has netted four goals in eight Premier League starts and 11 appearances this season, which is an impressive return.

And a deeper delve into his attacking numbers reveals that the striker is actually outperforming his expected goals (xG) by a fair amount. Indeed, he has scored those four goals from 2.50 xG this season.

He is also outperforming his expected goals on target (xGOT), which is currently 2.30 in the Premier League thus far.

This feat puts him on par with top scorers Erling Haaland, Igor Thiago and Antoine Semenyo, who are also outperforming both their xG and xGOT.

Isidor sits among some of the Premier League’s best

One thing to point out is that the names mentioned above have accumulated greater xG and xGOT than Isidor this season.

This indicates that Isidor is not consistently receiving quality goalscoring opportunities. As a result, it is unsurprising that some of his performances haven’t been up to standard this season.

Isidor needs more from Sunderland teammates

Isidor has been efficient in making the most out of the passes and chances he’s received this season.

While Sunderland fans will want to see more from the forward, his goalscoring efforts have arguably gone under the radar. I

In that regard, he shares similarities with some of the best forwards in the Premier League.

Isidor can be even better for Regis Le Bris, but he needs his teammates to create more chances than at present.
