Sunderland star Chris Rigg shows true colours during Newcastle United vs Barcelona

Sunderland supporters adore Chris Rigg despite his Newcastle United roots.

After a statement season in the Championship, Lazio were reportedly interested in Rigg, who has a promising future ahead of him.

However, Rigg signed a new contract at Sunderland to keep him at the Stadium of Light until June 2030.

Much has been made about his background, as he grew up as a boyhood Newcastle supporter; indeed, there have been jokes that he could one day make the move to Tyneside.

Now, the midfielder has shown his true colours after what he posted during the Magpies’ Champions League clash with Barcelona.

Sunderland staved off interest from Everton to keep their prized asset at the Stadium of Light.

After a monumental summer of transfer activity, Rigg has taken more of a peripheral role in Regis Le Bris’ squad.

However, that is by no means a suggestion that the teenager is struggling, but rather for his development.

While it has been a quiet week on the pitch for the Black Cats, Rigg has clearly been busy watching football.

During the Champions League clash between the Magpies and Barcelona on Thursday, the 18-year-old posted an image of himself on Snapchat wearing a Barcelona kit as a child.

The image surfaced online on Instagram on 18 September before it was quickly deleted.

Although there may be childhood images of him donning a Newcastle kit, he has clearly cemented his support for Sunderland in doing so.

Chris Rigg clearly a Sunderland supporter for life

It is funny how playing for a rival football club can completely change the team you support, but it happens.

Jamie Carragher was a boyhood Everton fan, but is now Liverpool through and through, having played for the Reds his whole career.

Indeed, Rigg’s career could follow the same narrative as he came through the North East club’s academy and is primed for a long career on Wearside.

The 18-year-old has often spoken about his admiration for Sunderland, and it is a bond that appears unbreakable.

While he may have to wait to make more of an impact on the first team, he is in the right place, surrounded by supporters who love him.
