Sunderland sign Greenwood as official transfer announcement made

Sunderland have welcomed Hannah Greenwood into the fold as the fight for promotion continues.

The Black Cats have been aware of the need for serious reinforcements if they are to continue pushing for promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League next season.

The Wearside outfit have announced contract extensions for several players throughout the summer, including 2024/25 Player of the Season winner Katie Kitching.

And Sunderland are showing no signs of slowing down as they officially announce a deal for Greenwood.

Greenwood signs a one-year deal with an extension option

Sunderland announced on Friday (18 July) that Greenwood has signed a one-year deal, with the club option of a further year.

The 26-year-old climbed through the ranks of Durham’s development system before progressing to their Women’s team.

More recently, she has impressed at Newcastle United, where she netted five times in 48 appearances for the Magpies. As a result, Sunderland are hoping she demonstrates a similar appetite during their upcoming promotional campaign.

On joining Wearside, Greenwood said: “I’ve been around the club for over a week, my teammates have been amazing, and I can’t wait to get to know them more. I’m really excited to be here, and I just can’t wait to get going.

Sunderland have a clear path forward

Sunderland finished seventh in the Women’s Championship last season, 13 points behind league leaders London City.

The Black Cats finished the season off with a series of ups and downs. This included a 1-0 defeat to rivals Newcastle United, who finished two spots ahead in the table.

As a result, Sunderland will be looking to change their fortunes next season and have made steps towards progress. This is best demonstrated by their movements in the summer transfer window.

Greenwood will join goalkeeper Grace Moloney, who joined last week (11 July) as part of the first batch of summer recruits. While these new signings showcase investment from Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, more will be needed if the Black Cats want a fighting chance at promotion.

The success of the men’s team last season demonstrates this best. Regis Le Bris led his side to Premier League promotion after defeating Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final.

His side have seen investment during the summer. Therefore, Melanie Reay will have to see further investment this summer so that she can pull her squad over the line.
