View: Sunderland showing v Bristol City proves Luke O’Nien importance

Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol City on Tuesday night, with Luke O’Nien’s absence certainly felt.

Concerns over his availability were raised by Regis Le Bris ahead of the encounter on 10 December, which were proven to be accurate with O’Nien not included in the squad at all.

The 30-year-old has been a key player for Sunderland throughout his time at the club, although many have underestimated his importance to the style of play adopted by Le Bris this season.

A lacklustre performance against the Robins in his absence surely put those doubts to bed and showcased why he needs to be in the team.

Sunderland struggle to make the most of possession v Bristol City

As has been the case on several occasions this season, the Black Cats dominated the game in all of the wrong areas and O’Nien is usually key in helping that.

Given his prior history as a midfielder, his ability on the ball is excellent and is often crucial to the transition between defence and attack, which Sunderland severely struggled with on Tuesday night.

O’Nien can play with both feet with ease and accuracy, and while Chris Mepham and Dan Ballard are excellent Championship defenders, neither are capable of ball playing ability of the former.

On too many occasions, Ballard in particular seemed lost on the ball and reluctant to drive forward in an attempt to break through opposition lines. Two things which O’Nien rarely struggles with.

Of course, Sunderland still made some decent chances in the clash but once again failed to take them when it mattered, resulting in another draw and leaving them with just one win in their last eight.

Simply put, O’Nien has to be one of the first names on the teamsheet once he returns to fitness.
