Sunderland set to face regret as Lutsharel Geertruida transfer decision made
Sunderland look set to opt against signing Lutsharel Geertruida permanently.
Geertruida was one of several ambitious signings made by the Black Cats in the summer, having failed to seal a deal for Jhon Lucumi as a result of Bologna’s unwillingness to sell.
The Dutch international arrived with a glowing reputation, and would go on to impress in the frist half of the season with several solid performances.
However, his role in the team shifted quickly, with Regis Le Bris naming him on the bench more often than not, and then failing to utilise him at all.
Sunderland had the option to sign him permanently this summer, but according to reports, they are set to opt against it, and it could come with regret.
Lutsharel Geertruida would have been perfect for Sunderland
Very rarely does the opportunity come around to sign a Dutch international for a fee in the region of £20million.
And even less often does it happen when the player in question is more than capable of playing across various positions.
| Premier League | Geertruida |
| Games | 25 |
| Starts | 14 |
| Duels won | 55 |
| Dribble success | 60% |
| Tackles | 34 |
Geertruida has been utilised at right-back, centre-back, left-back and even in midfield under Le Bris, and yet, despite injuries, he has not made an appearance since the end of March.
He played the full 90 in a 2-1 win away to Newcastle, which could prove to be the final game he ever plays for Sunderland.
What’s next for Geertruida?
Liverpool were heavily linked with the Dutchman in the winter window, but that interest was seemingly due to their injury situation.
Whether the interest remains this summer will largely depend on the future of Arne Slot, who could find himself out of a job.
However, given his talent and versatility, Geertruida will certainly have a whole host of suitors, many of whom may be in the Premier League.
It became apparent that Sunderland would look to move on from him, but it looks like it could be a big mistake, and one they could regret further down the line.
