Sunderland secure ‘immediate upgrade’ with new Le Fee signing – Ian Darke
Sunderland deserve credit for getting the signing of Enzo Le Fee over the line as he is an “immediate upgrade” on the options at the Stadium of Light, according to Ian Darke.
The TV commentator, speaking exclusively to Mackem News, has however insisted it could be very important for the promotion race for further additions to be secured by Monday (3 February).
Le Fee, 24, arrived having played six times in Serie A for Roma and has since impressed in his early performances for Regis Le Bris’ side.
“I’ve not seen an awful lot of him and he was struggling for regular football at Roma,” Darke said.
“But I think the key for Sunderland in a promotion race is an immediate upgrade, and that’s what they’ve got. He was up to speed very quickly and came straight in, and joins a strong young midfield.
“He’s a great option and what you want when going for promotion is a smart bit of business like that, and we’ll see whether they do anymore business of a similar standard.”
Sunderland out for more after encouraging Le Fee start
Sunderland have so far used Le Fee predominantly on the left-hand side, due to injuries preventing other options on the flank.
The Frenchman, who turns 25 on deadline day, is by trade a central player and will at some stage be expected to appear through the middle.

Several players – many from the continent – have been linked throughout the window due to the Black Cats’ penchant for scouting abroad, including striker William Geubbels (Foot Mercato, 30 January), who is wanted by several Championship clubs.
In other Sunderland news, the door has been opened for a defensive departure from Wearside before Monday.
