Sunderland relegation chances shift in supercomputer prediction after Crystal Palace draw

Regis Le Bris’ side picked up their first away point of the season on Saturday.

After the first four games of the Premier League season, there is a lot to be positive about at the Stadium of Light.

Those optimism levels were only increased by Sunderland’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend, despite the lack of threat posed in front of goal.

The Black Cats will be well aware of the fact that relegation will be hard to avoid, but after a draw against the reigning FA Cup winners, their chances of doing so have increased.

Relegation likelihood revealed for Sunderland after Crystal Palace draw

It wasn’t too long ago that Sunderland were favourites to finish bottom of the Premier League.

However, it is fair to say that those assumptions have changed over the last few weeks on the back of two positive results.

Robin Roefs was the hero against Crystal Palace, and the draw achieved at the weekend has massively reduced their chances of succumbing to the drop, though Opta still predict the Black Cats to finish in the bottom three as things stand.

However, from a 53.62 per cent chance of relegation, Sunderland’s chances of going down have been decreased to 47.56 per cent, showcasing the progress made.

Wolves are predicted to finish bottom, with Burnley and Leeds also in the same region as the Weasiders.

Robin Roefs could be unlikely Sunderland saviour

Roefs has been outstanding since arriving at Sunderland, and having a good keeper between the sticks can be the difference between staying in the division and not.

Le Bris needs to address the concerns going forward, and if that can be achieved sooner rather than later, Sunderland have everything in place that will be needed to survive the drop.

In the history of the Premier League, a team has never been relegated with 11 points from the first 10 games, and with Sunderland just four points away from that benchmark after four games, there are plenty of promising signs.
