Sunderland ready Romaine Mundle talks after new transfer developments

Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle is set for talks over his future at the Stadium of Light.

Mundle, 22, is coming off a tremendous first full season in Wearside, playing 24 Championship games as the Black Cats secured promotion to the Premier League.

The Englishman struggled with injuries in the second half of the season, before returning in the semi-final second leg against Coventry.

The winger is already attracting interest, but Regis Le Bris is keen to act quickly after promotion.

Sunderland plan to offer Mundle a new contract

Sunderland are looking to keep Mundle at the Stadium of Light for their Premier League return, despite other clubs circling.

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has reported via X that the Black Cats plan to open talks with Mundle over a new contract.

The Mackems are already facing interest in Mundle from the likes of PSV Eindhoven and Nice, as well as several other Premier League sides.

The Black Cats also plan to open talks with several other key players over improved deals ahead of the new season, to keep the core of the squad together.

The news comes as midfielder Jobe Bellingham has travelled to Germany to enter talks over a potential exit, with RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund interested.

Mundle deal is the start of Sunderland’s mission to keep young core

Sunderland‘s push towards promotion in 2024/25 was built upon their young squad.

The Black Cats are the youngest side to ever win a second-tier play-off final, with an average age of just 24.3 years.

Le Bris’ side has the perfect combination of potential for the future, whilst also being able to compete now, with the addition of some experience thrown in.

Losing the core of the side would have the potential to completely destroy this project, so locking up their young talent to long-term contracts is essential, as well as bolstering the squad with Premier League quality.

With Bellingham likely to leave, Sunderland may look to add more experience to the squad, with the likes of Jordan Henderson linked already, who could leave Ajax this summer.

They will also look to fix the issue of expiring contracts, with eight players entering the final year of their contract, including captain Dan Neil, Dennis Cirkin and Luke O’Nien.

This is a critical summer for those in red and white.
