Sunderland ready ‘perfect Greenwood homecoming’ with new Le Bris transfer
Regis Le Bris is already preparing for the Premier League season with a busy transfer window taking shape at Sunderland.
Defensive reinforcements are already being pursued at the Stadium of Light, as the Black Cats prepare for the step up to the top flight with new signings throughout.
Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson have already departed, making replacements essential.
Le Bris will also be looking to bring in much-needed Premier League experience in the final third, if they are serious about survival, with former academy star Sam Greenwood now an option.

Greenwood set for Sunderland homecoming
The Daily Mail (16 June) has reported that Greenwood is a new target for Le Bris.
The 23-year-old spent the last season on loan at Preston North End from Leeds and has one year left on his contract at Elland Road.
After earning promotion, Leeds are looking to improve their attacking options, which could see Greenwood given limited opportunities to break through.
The attacker has already struggled to earn first-team minutes in West Yorkshire, as he also spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Middlesbrough.
Leicester City have been leading the running; however, the Black Cats have now joined the race to bring Greenwood back to his hometown, after he was spotted training locally.

Greenwood would be valuable to Sunderland’s attack
Le Bris will be looking to fill gaps in Sunderland’s attack ahead of their Premier League season, after the exit of notable stars.
With both Watson and Bellingham leaving, experienced and exciting players are what the Black Cats need to bring in this summer.
Greenwood would be a valuable addition to Le Bris’ side, as he has two solid years’ experience in the Championship, making regular appearances, and comes at a low cost, which could make him a valid back-up option.
Season | Apperances | Goals | Assists | Cards |
24/25 Preston North End | 45 | 7 | 3 | 9 |
23/24 Middlesbrough | 38 | 5 | 3 | 7 |
The only concern is the frequency with which Greenwood receives cards, which could become even worse with the intensity and physicality of the Premier League, which could be set to punish Sunderland.
A move to Sunderland could be ideal for Greenwood, allowing him to play for his hometown team with an opportunity to make further Premier League appearances, yet it is uncertain whether Sunderland will pursue their interest further.
