Sunderland ready January deal to sign Jhon Lucumi as deadline day details emerge
Sunderland still haven’t given up their pursuit of Jhon Lucumi.
Sunderland’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace exposed the lack of creativity in the squad, but also highlighted just how strong the Black Cats are defensively.
Omar Alderete has shone for Sunderland, though his role in the side could have been very different with the business attempted in the summer.
Lucumi was heavily linked with Sunderland, and it seems as though that interest is going to carry through to the winter transfer window.

Jhon Lucumi deal not dead yet at Sunderland
Bologna opted against letting Lucumi join Sunderland in the latter stages of the window, despite having signed Torbjorn Heggem from West Brom.
Many assumed he would be the Colombian’s replacement, but according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon on 14 September, the Serie A side wanted another arrival before sanctioning his exit on deadline day.
It is also claimed that the Mackems will try to bring Lucumi to Wearside once again in the winter transfer window, after putting around £25million aside for his signature.
The last deadline day effort failed in the end.

This time, Sunderland will have much more flexibility, having significantly bolstered their defensive options with Nordi Mukiele and Lutsharel Geetruida.
A lot of it may come down to where the Black Cats are in the league table when the winter transfer window arrives.

Do Sunderland still need to sign Jhon Lucumi?
Lucumi would be a good addition, though once again, it will largely be determined by Sunderland’s league position.
At the moment, chance creation is their biggest concern, with the defensive shape looking very strong, after two clean sheets from the first four games.
Should that theme continue, the Black Cats will almost certainly look to invest more in their attacking options.
With that said, the hierarchy at the Stadium of Light will be keeping a close eye on how things pan out over the next few months.
