Sunderland promotion chances predicted by supercomputer after Sheff Weds win

Sunderland got back to winning ways on Friday evening, securing a huge three points away to Sheffield Wednesday, keeping their promotion hopes intact for now.

The Black Cats have enjoyed a wonderful season at large, though the last two defeats for Sunderland inflicted a huge blow to their automatic promotion hopes.

Regis Le Bris’ side entered the clash at Hillsborough (28 February) knowing just how important a win was going to be, and courtesy of another Eliezer Mayenda brace, they achieved just that.

Sunderland’s win wasn’t without controversy, though the Mackems will be unphased by that as they look ahead to the final 11 games of the season.

Supercomputer forecasts Sunderland promotion chances

Albeit there is a likelihood this could change with Sheffield United due to face QPR, Sunderland currently sit five points outside of the top two but have a healthy advantage over the teams below them.

However, according to the latest supercomputer predictions, that gap is unlikely to be bridged, with the Black Cats expected to finish fourth by the end of the season.

Just a 0.02 per cent chance remains for the title, with a 2.04 per cent of achieving automatic promotion. However, the numbers get far more promising from there.

Sunderland are predicted to finish fourth

Sunderland are expected to finish the season on 82 points, with a 97.7 per cent chance of finishing inside the playoffs, which at this moment in time, almost seems like a given.

While anything can happen between now and then, if the predictions were to come true, it would mean that the Wearsiders face off against Coventry in the playoff semi finals with a fifth placed finish predicted for them.

Mayenda key to promotion hopes at Sunderland

Mayenda started the season as the only striker at the club, leaving plenty of concerns to be had among the fans, but his development since then has been nothing short of astounding.

His brace scored against Sheffield Wednesday was his sixth goal of the season and his 11th direct goal contribution, having only started 16 games this campaign.

If the Mackems are to go on and achieve promotion, the Spanaird simply seeds to start featuring regularly alongside Wilson Isidor.
