Sunderland player should be buzzing at Jordan Henderson transfer talk

Sunderland have been linked with a move for ex-academy graduate Jordan Henderson and captain Dan Neil should be excited at the rumour.

Reports from The Sun [5 October] suggest that Henderson could be set for a return to England after a disappointing spell at Ajax and should the signing materialise, Neil may benefit from it more than anyone else.

Ironically, it was Henderson who Neil was often compared to when the skipper first burst onto the scene with his passing ability and leadership qualities at such a young age.

Henderson, a Champions League winner with Sunderland, would provide a wealth of experience to the Sunderland side and almost certainly contribute to the squad, despite being 34 years old.

Following the release of former captain Corry Evans, Sunderland have a ready-made replacement and one that comes in the form of a Sunderland supporter.

Jordan Henderson an invaluable mentor for Dan Neil

Neil has had his ups and downs so far this season whilst occupying the ‘six’ role under Regis Le Bris, and having someone like Henderson alongside him both on and off the pitch will only aid his development.

After being named team captain in the summer, Neil has seemingly taken a lot of the pressure on his shoulders and there would be no better player to help alleviate that than Henderson, who knows how to play the role down to a tee.

Henderson captained Liverpool to a Premier League title as well as a Champions League so he certainly has the leadership abilities that can be passed on to Neil and mould him into an even stronger midfield option than he already is.

It’s hard to see a world in which the signing would turn out to be a negative one. However, it will certainly be one that will continue to murmur until January.
