Sunderland player ratings vs Huddersfield: Harrison Jones shines, 3/10 star flops
Sunderland suffered a penalty-shootout defeat against Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday at the Stadium of Light.
The game ended 1-1, but the League One side won the penalty shootout 6-5, with Milan Aleksic missing the decisive penalty.
Leo Castledine opened the scoring for the visitors against the run of play in the ninth minute of the contest.
The hosts dominated possession and created most of the goal-scoring opportunities and finally broke the deadlock in the 84th minute courtesy of Marc Guiu.
Sunderland failed to bounce back from the loss to Burnley and Regis Le Bris needs to quickly get spirits back up at the Stadium of Light.

Harrison Jones shines for Sunderland
Harrison Jones looked to get forward any time he had a chance and pegged back the Huddersfield defenders.
The 20-year-old was undoubtedly the best player on the pitch as he put in a proper shift right from the start.
He was exceptional with his duels, both aerial and ground ones and was tidy with the ball at his feet too.
While he was a tad wayward with his crosses, one cannot fault him for lack of application and Jones will give Le Bris a lot to think about this season.

Chris Rigg wasted on the right by Regis Le Bris
Chris Rigg faced injury issues ahead of Sunderland’s pre-season campaign, but he recovered to impress in the build-up to the new season.
He has showcased time and again why Le Bris trusts him to put in a shift no matter where he is on the pitch.
However, against Huddersfield, the 18-year-old struggled playing on the right wing.
Stat | Chris Rigg vs Huddersfield Town |
Touches | 58 |
Accurate Passes | 29/41 (71%) |
Key Passes | 1 |
Crosses (Accurate) | 1 (0) |

Dribble Attempts (Successful) | 3 (1) |
Ground Duels (Won) | 10 (3) |

He thrives in a more central position and it’s clear that this was an experiment that failed from Le Bris.
Rigg was shoddy with his passing, failed to get into dangerous positions and failed to be an attacking threat for the hosts.
It’s fair to say that the manager is not likely to play the Englishman in that position again anytime soon.
