View: Sunderland optimism after Ben Crompton display v Tottenham
Sunderland Under-21s defender Ben Crompton started for Tamworth in their FA Cup defeat to Tottenham and more than caught the eye.
While Harrison Jones made his first senior start for Sunderland, Crompton was facing up against Tottenham in the FA Cup and many were pleased with his performance.
Ultimately, both players were on the receiving end of a defeat but the duo showed promise, with Crompton playing a crucial role in Tamworth’s performance which took Spurs all the way to extra time.
Ben Crompton shows promise out on loan from Sunderland
Loan spells are often crucial to the development of young players and the likelihood of first-team involvement for Crompton at Sunderland was minimal.
A loan move to Tamworth presented him with the opportunity to get some much-needed senior experience, although it’s highly unlikely he was expecting to face up against Tottenham during the spell.
However, he fared well in the game and he played a crucial role in maintaining a clean sheet in regular time, having won five of his eight attempted tackles in the game as well as completing 11 clearances [FotMob].

His exposure to such high-intensity opposition will do him the world of good ahead of a return to Sunderland, where he will have to fight off stern competition if he is to break into the senior lineup.
Sunderland’s youth system is thriving yet again this season and it can be seen as nothing but a positive that the Black Cats have several players thriving out on loan.
