Sunderland on course to create Premier League history after win vs Wolves

Sunderland moved up to seventh in the Premier League following their 2-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.

The Stadium of Light has been crucial for Sunderland, as the Black Cats have recorded their best home start to a top-flight season since 1968-69.

Sunderland’s 2-0 win against Wolves on 18 October came as a result of Nordi Mukiele’s first goal for the Black Cats and a late Ladislav Krejci own goal.

The Mackems now sit on 14 points and could be on course to break a Premier League record.

Sunderland set to achieve record points total for a promoted side

Regis Le Bris’ side have gained plaudits for how they’ve adapted to the top flight, with the Stadium of Light slowly becoming a Premier League fortress.

Currently going at a rate of 1.75 points per game, they are on course to break the 38-game Premier League record for the highest points tally for a promoted side.

That record is held by Ipswich, who got 66 points in their first season back in the top flight in 2000-01.

Sunderland’s Premier League record in 2025-26

Sunderland have been praised for their summer transfer window, with the majority of the signings hitting the ground running.

It’s come as a huge shock to fans, with Sunderland predicted as favourites for relegation at the start of the season.

Whilst supporters won’t have their eyes set on any European ambitions, Sunderland’s early-season form could lead to much bigger achievements than just avoiding relegation.

A key component of their success so far has been their ability to defend against seasoned Premier League attackers without much trouble for the majority of their matches.

Sunderland’s defensive stability is the key to their success

Sunderland’s resilience has shone through on plenty of occasions this season, and it has earned them four clean sheets already.

Robin Roefs has been an excellent signing in goal, whilst Mukiele and Omar Alderete have endeared themselves to fans over their contributions in defence.

Granit Xhaka is the lynchpin of the team, with the captain mopping up any loose balls just in front of the defence, and his acquisition has been hailed as one of the best signings of the season.

These are incredibly exciting times for Black Cats fans, and Le Bris’ impact on the Premier League could have Sunderland on course to break some impressive records.

Of course, nobody expects Sunderland to reach anywhere near that points total, but just to be on track is a phenomenal start by those in red and white.
