Sunderland must stand firm as Monaco make new Simon Adingra request

Sunderland will have a decision to make on the future of Simon Adingra this summer.

The Black Cats are just one win away from European football, which, in all honesty, is quite the statement given the fact that it is less than 12 months since they secured victory in the play-off final.

Nevertheless, it’s a testament to the success they have found on their return to the top flight, regardless of what happens on Sunday.

This summer is going to be another huge one in terms of recruitment, with Sundelrand in need of additional quality to prevent second-season syndrome from taking its toll.

However, they will also have a decision to make over the future of several stars at the Stadium of Light, and Adingra is one of them.

Monaco unlikely to trigger Simon Adingra clause

Adingra was arguably the only summer signing that failed to pay off for Sunderland, and even then, it would be hard to label the move as a failed one.

The former Brighton winger joined Monaco on loan in January, where he has since found his best form, sparking optimism over a permanent deal.

Monaco is believed to have a £14.8million option to buy, but a report from L’Equipe states that they are unlikely to trigger it, though they remain keen on a deal.

They seem intent on negotiating a lower fee for his transfer, which leaves the Black Cats with a clear call to make.

Sunderland cannot succumb to Monaco demands

The Black Cats paid a fee in the region of £20m to sign Adingra last summer, and it seems as though Monaco will be willing to pay around half of that.

Given the season he has had in France, it would be ludicrous for those demands to be accepted, though it may hinge on what happens on Sunday.

If European football is achieved, Sunderland will need far more depth than they have had to work with this season.

And given his experience of playing in Europe, Adingra could easily return to the Stadium of Light to satisfy that.
