Sunderland make Ryerson decision as ‘dream’ transfer lined up for Dortmund ace
Julian Ryerson’s red-hot form for Borussia Dortmund has not gone unnoticed by Sunderland.
The Black Cats are determined to kick life back in the Premier League off with a bang and have added several new signings to their ranks.
However, so far, Sunderland’s hungry mindset and new additions don’t seem to have made the desired impact on the pitch. Indeed, Regis Le Bris’ side have been defeated in back-to-back pre-season games, the latest a narrow 1-0 loss to Real Betis (2 August).
As a result, Sunderland are continuing to do business with their sights now set on Ryerson.

Sunderland have added Ryerson to their list
As reported by Patrick Berger via X on Monday (4 July), Sunderland have added Dortmund right-back Ryerson to their list. However, there are no concrete talks at this stage.
Berger, whose contract with Borussia runs until 2028, intends to remain at the German club for now.
- Summer 2013: Ryerson joins Viking FK but does not make his breakthrough until 2016
- 31 July 2018: FC Union Berlin sign Ryerson from Viking
- 17 Janurary 2023: Dortmund sign Ryerson on a three and a half year deal
But the Black Cats are in luck as it is his “dream” to play in the Premier League, and with Wolves also interested in signing the players, Sunderland may need to accelerate their interest soon.
Ryerson would be a good investment
With Trai Hume and Niall Huggins both under contract at the club, Sunderland are not lacking in the right-back department. However, the best and most successful teams in the world have enough squad depth to last a lifetime.
Ryerson was a regular starter for Dortmund last season, making 47 appearances in all competitions and even scoring a couple of goals. His style of play is best defined by his aggressive approach when entering duels and stamping out opposition chances.
He demonstrates a willingness to enter tackles and defensive duels, which would bode well given the physicality of the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Huggins has recently returned after months on the sidelines after recovering from injury, and Hume has been linked with an exit this summer. There is every possibility that both will be fit and committed next season, but Sunderland should look to bring in another body to encourage greater competition.
Therefore, the Black Cats should continue to monitor Ryerson over the coming weeks before deciding whether to pounce or return to the charge at a later date.
