Sunderland make official Mepham announcement after opening of transfer window

Sunderland are wasting no time in shaping their squad after their promotion back to the Premier League.

The Black Cats earned promotion back to the Premier League with a dramatic victory over Sheffield United in the play-off final at Wembley last month.

And now decisions have been made over a number of first team and Under-21s players ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Chris Mepham returns to Bournemouth after Sunderland loan spell

Sunderland fans will be keenly aware of the monumental impact the Welsh international made during his loan spell from Bournemouth.

Playing an instrumental role in the heart of the defence, with 40 appearances and even a crucial early substitute appearance in the play-off final at Wembley, Mepham quickly became a fan favourite.

Sunderland have now officially confirmed via their official website (4 June) that Mepham, alongside fellow loan star Salis Abdul Samed (from RC Lens), has returned to his parent club following the conclusion of his loan deal.

Mepham’s contribution to Sunderland’s promotion campaign was immense, providing a vital defensive presence and leadership that helped guide the Black Cats to the Premier League.

His departure marks the end of a successful loan period, and the club extends its gratitude for his efforts during his time on Wearside.

Sunderland squad shaping up as retained list released

Beyond the immediate focus on Chris Mepham, Sunderland’s retained list also sheds light on other departures as the club streamlines its squad for the demands of the Premier League.

The most notable permanent Sunderland first-team exit is that of Tommy Watson, who has already had his move to Brighton & Hove Albion confirmed.

Watson’s departure comes after a heroic end to his time on Wearside, including a dramatic stoppage-time winner at Wembley that sealed Sunderland’s Premier League promotion, a moment that will live long in the memory of the Stadium of Light faithful.

In addition to these senior movements, a number of promising young players from the Under-21s setup will also be leaving the Academy of Light this summer upon the expiration of their contracts. These include: Ben Crompton, Cuba Mitchell, Caden Kelly and Kelechi Chibueze.

Second-year scholars Aaron Chung and Daniel Parker will also depart upon the expiration of their scholarship deals.

These changes are all part of the natural cycle of squad evolution as the club aims for sustainable growth at the highest level.

While these departures mark the end of chapters for some players, Sunderland have also been busy securing their future.

The club has confirmed that Enzo Le Fee will officially become a permanent Sunderland player on a four-year deal starting 1 July – a move that will undoubtedly excite supporters.

The club has also offered first professional contracts to several promising academy prospects and agreed one-year extensions for others, demonstrating a clear focus on nurturing future talent alongside their immediate Premier League ambitions.

The stage is set for a busy summer on Wearside as the Black Cats prepare to make their mark on the top flight.
