Confirmed: Sunderland make new backroom hire for Regis Le Bris

Sunderland have concluded their lengthy search to find a new assistant head coach to Regis Le Bris with the appointment of Pedro Ribeiro.

The club announced the arrival of the 38-year-old on their official website on Tuesday (8 October), with Ribeiro having previously worked as an assistant at Porto and head coach at Penafiel among other clubs.

Sunderland added that Ribeiro will work alongside Mike Dodds, first team coach Michael Proctor, and head of goalkeeping Alessandro Barcherini.

Upon concluding the deal, Ribiero told Sunderland’s club channels: “I’m privileged to be part of one of the most historical and progressive Football Clubs in English football. It’s a real honour and I’m grateful for the trust placed in me. I’ll do my best to contribute and to support our players, as we all work to achieve Sunderland’s long-term goals.”

What does this mean for Sunderland?

Ultimately, the appointment will only help the club going forward. Ribiero boasts an impressive amount of coaching experience having been involved in the game for 19 years, many of which are at clubs with high standards, and having an extra set of eyes to oversee the club’s playing philosophy will only help better the identity and development of players.

Sunderland have already adapted very well to the way Le Bris has set them out, sitting top of the table having lost just two games so far this season.

A draw against Leeds last Friday (4 October) meant that the Black Cats were able to maintain their unbeaten home run albeit thanks to a calamitous error by goalkeeper Illan Meslier in the 97th minute.

Ribiero will get involved in preparation for Sunderland’s trip to Hull City immediately with the side hoping to improve on their previous two away games that ended in defeat to Plymouth Argyle and Watford.

In other Sunderland news, Sunderland have been linked with a move for ex-academy graduate Jordan Henderson and captain Dan Neil should be excited at the rumour.
