Sunderland make approach to sign Ruben Vargas as cash issues emerge, £4m saving on the cards
Sunderland are in a race with several other Premier League clubs to land winger Ruben Vargas in the January transfer window.
Regis Le Bris’s side currently sit seventh in the top-flight after a superb start to the season, but are still looking to strengthen their attacking ranks for the second half of the campaign.
Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United on Sunday afternoon, but despite failing to pick up all three points, the result ensured that the Black Cats’ unbeaten run at the Stadium of Light continued.
The Wearside outfit have not lost a home game in the Premier League all season, recording five wins and four draws.
Le Bris will hope that his side’s good form can convince Vargas to join in January, in what would be a bargain deal.

Ruben Vargas available for a cut-price
Vargas signed for Sevilla back in January 2025, but he is already being linked with a move away from the Spanish club.
According to Diario ABC, Sunderland are one of the sides interested in the Swiss international, but they could face competition from the likes of Leeds and Bournemouth.
Sevilla valued Vargas at around £13million last summer, although the asking price has now dropped to just under £9m.
The La Liga side are very much strapped for cash and will be looking to make a big sale in the January window, which is why the winger could be available for a cut-price fee.
Who else are Sunderland targeting in January?
Sunderland could be set for a calmer January transfer window after splashing the cash during the summer.
As evidenced by their interest in Vargas, the Black Cats are targeting a winger who can help Le Bris’ side continue their good form into the second half of the season.
The likes of Matteo Guendouzi and Conor Gallagher have also been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland will slowly see their Africa Cup of Nations stars return during January, so their squad will expand without them even dipping into the transfer market.
After several clever additions over the summer though, it would be no surprise if the Wearside outfit have a couple of tricks up their sleeve once again.
