Sunderland make approach to sign Stefan Ortega after Man City agreement – Exclusive

Sunderland are lining up a move to sign Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, Mackem News understands.

The Black Cats have made plenty of progress in the summer transfer window so far, though efforts to replace Anthony Patterson have fallen short.

Djordje Petrovic and Marcin Bulka were both heavily mooted for a switch to Sunderland, but moved on to Bournemouth and Neom respectively.

Now, Sunderland appear to have turned their focus to another target, after the latest update on Manchester City’s Ortega.

Ortega wants Premier League stay as Sunderland circle

James Trafford looks set to sign for Manchester City after a £27million deal was reportedly agreed with Burnley, which has opened the door for Ortega to leave, with several clubs interested.

Mackem News has learned that Sunderland are one of the clubs that have enquired about the German goalkeeper, who is believed to be prioritising a move that would see him stay in England.

Leicester City and Burnley are also said to be keen on the keeper.

Ortega featured 22 times for Pep Guardiola’s side in all competitions last time out, including 13 appearances in the Premier League.

At 32 years of age, he has a wealth of experience, which is one thing that the current Sunderland side are often accused of lacking.

Ortega could be just what Sunderland need

Having an experienced head between the sticks is often undervalued in football, and his ball-playing ability would suit the way Sunderland have played under Regis Le Bris.

With several clubs registering an interest in the German, Sunderland will face competition if they are to pursue a deal, though it remains clear that it is an area of the team that they want to strengthen.

Sunderland still have a lot of work to do this summer, though, with the season still a few weeks away; time is on their side.
