Sunderland are interested in a deal to sign Wales international and current Rangers star Rabbi Matondo, according to Rangers News.

The Scottish news outlet reported [15 January] that Matondo is of interest to Sunderland, who have already showcased their ambition with the signing of Enzo Le Fee.

Given that Tommy Watson is sidelined, the Black Cats may be looking to add wide cover, with Matondo also of interest to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Scottish giants are believed to want a seven-figure fee to see Matondo depart Ibrox permanently.

Rabbi Matondo to Sunderland?

Sunderland evidently remain in the market for attacking reinforcements, having previously been linked with a move for Southampton's Ben Brereton Diaz [Sky Sports], so the link to the Welshman makes sense.

It hasn't quite gone to plan for Matondo at Rangers, having struggled to get consistent game time since his arrival in 2022, and a new adventure could be just what he needs to kickstart his career.

Where have we heard that before? Jack Clarke, Patrick Roberts, etc.

Given the youth-orientated approach on Wearside and the willingness from the club to get players back on track, a move to Sunderland could suit Matondo.

Especially in the immediate future, you'd imagine there would be strong assurances over game time in the absence of Watson and Romaine Mundle.

Whether a deal materialises or not, it could certainly be one to keep an eye on with it likely to develop fast given Rangers' desires to offload the forward.
