Sunderland line up game-changing deal as Openda transfer details emerge
Sunderland could make a sensational move for RB Leipzig’s Lois Openda.
The Mackems are prioritising attacking reinforcements after bringing in Granit Xhaka to add further depth to their midfield.
Regis Le Bris’ side have so far made eight signings this summer, with Simon Adingra and Marc Guiu the only forwards signed so far.
Promoted sides notoriously struggle to score in the Premier League, and the Black Cats could make a new addition that would suppress that worry in Openda.

Sunderland add Openda to their shortlist
Sunderland are constantly being linked with different players this summer.
The Mackems recently completed the signing of Robin Roefs in goal, and have made some solid additions in midfield.
Now, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg on X (2 August), Sunderland have added Openda to their shortlist for this summer transfer window.
- Openda came through at Club Brugge as a youngster
- He found form on loan at Vitesse before heading to Lens
- He now plays for Leipzig after joining in the 2023 summer transfer window
He adds that it is questionable whether RB Leipzig would be willing to let the 25-year-old striker leave as well, with Xavi Simons and Benjamin Sesko subject to plenty of interest this summer.
Sesko has been linked with Sunderland’s rivals Newcastle this summer, and should the Mackems wrap up a deal for Openda, it would be unlikely that the Magpies will get their target.
One supporter replied: “This is genuinely obscene, we might actually do a Leicester”.
Another added: “Woah, if they get him, they might finish top 8. This is a game changer.”
Openda seems an unlikely signing for Sunderland
Given Leipzig’s position on Openda, it seems unlikely that Openda will be heading to Wearside.
Striker is a position of concern for the Mackems and they must look elsewhere to add to their attack.
Wilson Isidor will need more help up top next season, and the Black Cats must push to sign a striker before the start of the season, or they could struggle to score.
Marc Guiu is a solid addition for Le Bris, but the youngster can’t carry all the goalscoring responsibility.
