Sunderland line up Brennan Johnson transfer as Tottenham agreement reached
Brennan Johnson has emerged as a transfer target for Sunderland.
Sunderland will be looking to make the most of the January transfer window and strengthen their hopes of qualifying for European football.
The Black Cats sit seventh after their 1-1 draw with Leeds United, which also saw them maintain their unbeaten run at the Stadium of Light.
Attacking signings are going to be needed to strengthen their hopes of pushing up the Premier League table, and Tottenham’s Johnson could prove to be one of them.

Johnson heads for Tottenham exit in January
With Wilson Isidor, Brian Brobbey and Eliezer Mayenda, Sunderland have three strikers in a system that usually adopts one.
Therefore, it seems unlikely that the Black Cats will be looking to bring in a new number nine in the transfer window, though it can’t be ruled out.
However, depth in the wide areas is certainly something to improve, and Fabrizio Romano has reported via his YouTube channel that Tottenham and Wales international Johnson is one of Sunderland’s targets.
Spurs have already reached an agreement with Crystal Palace for the transfer, though the decision now lies with Johnson as to where he wants to go.
Romano said: “Brennan Johnson has to decide whether he wants to go to Crystal Palace or wait for other opportunities.
“It is my understanding that Bournemouth are ready to pay the transfer fee, and there are also Sunderland and Everton calling in the last 24 hours.”
A fee in the region of £33.5million will be enough to seal his transfer, which would be a new club-record deal for the Black Cats if they were to pursue it.
Stats show why Johnson would be a game-changer for Sunderland
Isidor is Sunderland’s top scorer with four goals, showcasing the lack of quality they have in the forward areas, at least of a clinical nature.
Johnson’s stats from the current campaign may not suggest he is the answer, though, based on the fact that he scored 18 times for Spurs, who finished 17th last season, it would be a remarkable addition.
The 24-year-old can play on either flank with ease and poses a genuine goal threat with the positions he finds himself in.
He had 54 shots in the Premier League last campaign, showcasing his willingness to take a strike on, which is something Sunderland have lacked this season.
There will be competition for his signature, but if the Wearsiders can get a deal done, it would be yet another huge statement.
