Sunderland ‘leave no transfer stone unturned’ after remarkable La Liga reveal

Sunderland have shocked the entire football world since their promotion to the Premier League.

The Black Cats have not hidden their ambition so far this summer.

Regis Le Bris’ side are not just there to make up the numbers in the top flight, with multiple blockbuster signings like Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra arriving at the Stadium of Light despite interest from direct rivals Leeds United.

If Kristjaan Speakman’s word is anything to go by, then Sunderland are not going to be resting on their laurels for the rest of the window, with several more players expected to arrive in the north east.

Sunderland spending more than the majority of La Liga combined

Bafode Diakite could be the Wearsiders’ latest addition, with Le Bris’ side needing defensive reinforcements after already investing heavily in the midfield and forward line.

Despite their bid of just over £23million being rejected for the defender, many in the footballing world, including Sunderland fans, have been surprised at the amount of money being thrown around.

In an incredible statistic posted by The Touchline on X (17 July), it was revealed that Sunderland alone have outspent the entirety of La Liga combined, excluding only Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Currently, Sunderland have spent £100.1million, whilst the other 17 teams in the Spanish top-flight combined have only managed to spend £61.9million.

With a new goalkeeper also on Sunderland’s shopping list to replace Anthony Patterson, this gap could grow even further.

Sunderland must continue to leverage Premier League status

Due to the vast amounts of money involved when you become a Premier League club, Sunderland instantly become one of the wealthiest and most attractive propositions for players looking for a move.

Whilst they are in the top-flight, the Black Cats can use this leverage to beat the vast majority of European clubs, which have been established in their respective top division for many years, to new signings.

This is the case for anyone who gains promotion, but when the club that goes up, in this case, Sunderland, has a massive fanbase and rich history, then the appeal only grows for talented players who want to play in the best league in the world.

The north-east club may be unsuccessful in their pursuit of players like Jhon Lucumi due to the Colombian wanting to play in the Champions League, but that doesn’t stop them.

For most clubs that cannot offer European football, particularly those on the continent, Sunderland are more than capable of beating them to transfer targets.

Long may that continue.
