Sunderland want to sign Brighton ace Evan Ferguson on loan – report

Sunderland are one of several clubs to have expressed an interest in signing Brighton hot-shot Evan Ferguson on loan in January, according to The Scotsman.

The Black Cats may be in the market for striking reinforcements and according to the Scottish outlet (18 December), Ferguson is one of the names being considered.

Whether Sunderland do pursue a striker remains to be seen and the emergence of Trey Ogunsuyi at youth level may alleviate their needs but if they do chase a deal, they will face competition from Leeds United as well as from Premier League clubs (TEAMtalk).

Evan Ferguson signing could put Sunderland in Dreamland

The prospect of Ferguson playing Championship football is unlikely but exciting given the pedigree he has previously shown at Premier League level.

His physicality matched with his ability to find the back of the net could be perfectly suited to England’s second tier and if Sunderland can somehow muster up a deal, their promotion chances go up tenfold.

While a striker may not be the first priority, his addition is something that would greatly improve their attacking threat which has been minimal given the injuries to several attacking players in recent months.

With Nazariy Rusyn heading for an exit (Dmytro Vienkov), the Wearsiders may be afforded some extra wiggle room when it comes to loan fees and wages which could prove the difference in the race to sign Ferguson.

Whether Ferguson ends up at the Stadium of Light or not, January will undoubtedly be a busy period for the Mackems as they prepare for the second half of their promotion push.
