Sunderland in running to sign Jamie Vardy after Leicester news

Jamie Vardy could be lining up for Sunderland in the near future.

The 38-year-old announced that he will leave Leicester at the end of the season after 13-years with the Foxes, in which he has won the Premier League and the FA Cup in a remarkable rise from non-league football.

However, the veteran is not retiring and could even end up staying in English football after the shocking reveal that he will quit the King Power Stadium.

Sunderland in contention for Vardy signature

Plenty of clubs are expected to join the race for Vardy, the Stadium of Light outfit will have to convince him of their project.

They are ranked at 10/1 with Gambling.com to sign the former England striker and their chances probably depend on securing promotion via the playoffs.

The likes of Wrexham (4/5), Celtic (6/4) and Rangers (7/4) are the favourites for his signature with that outlet.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday are 1/2 favourites with OLBG with the likes of West Ham and Everton at 6/1 and a move to the MLS rated at 3/1.

Vardy move makes no sense for Sunderland

Given his advanced age, a swoop for Vardy makes little sense for Regis Le Bris‘ side, especially considering the competition that is set to fight for his services.

They would likely have to make a significant offer to gazump the other contenders and could utilise the funds better elsewhere on younger targets with a higher upside.

If they secure promotion at the end of the season, it may be a more useful move as he has a lot of experience in the top-flight, but on the pitch his influence is waning as he has notched just seven goals and three assists this season.

Therefore, they should steer clear of the Foxes’ star and put their focus on long-term targets who can improve them rather than a player who is past his peak.

His story is one of the most inspiring in football but Sunderland does not need to be a part of it, the negatives outweigh the potential benefits on this occasion and he should be avoided.
