Although the Mackems have not won a top-tier title since 1936, they proudly have six to their name, with the first arriving in 1892.

More recently, the Mackems were crowned as Championship title winners in 2007, which prompted a 10-year stint in the Premier League.

Sunderland FA Cup trophies

The FA Cup is the oldest domestic cup competition in world football, and Sunderland have had their fair share of history, winning it twice.

The Mackems also finished as FA Cup runners-up in both 1992 and 1913.

1973 FA Cup final, Leeds United v Sunderland

The 1973 FA Cup final, played out between Leeds United and Sunderland, was the 92nd cup final, and proved to be one of the greatest day in the Black Cats’ history.

Leeds were then one of the best First Division sides in England, whereas the Mackems were playing in the second tier.

The West Yorkshire outfit also arrived at Wembley as defending FA Cup champions, having beaten Arsenal in the 1972 final.

However, it was Sunderland who produced a cup upset which is still widely talked about beyond the North East, thanks to Ian Porterfield’s solitary goal in a 1-0 win.
