Sunderland hold bizarre 195-day record after Aston Villa draw

Sunderland’s strengths so far this season have been showcased on home soil.

Off the back of Sunderland’s 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, the Black Cats remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light in league fixtures.

When it comes to relegation battles, people often highlight the importance of good home form, and Sunderland have showcased just that.

However, the latest reveal goes far beyond that and demonstrates just how influential the Stadium of Light support has been this season.

Every Sunderland goal has been scored at Roker End

Yes, you read that right.

Of the six goals that Sunderland have scored at home this season, every single one has been scored in front of the Roker End.

In fact, the last time Sunderland scored a goal in front of the North Stand was back on 11 March, when Romaine Mundle’s strike secured a late point against Preston, 195 days ago.

So far this season, the Black Cats have attacked the Roker End in the second half, which, while many will see as irrelevant, is actually a very smart thing to do.

As energy starts to drain out of the players, the noise and energy from the Roker End spills onto the pitch, and has played a huge part in the latter stages of games this season.

The Stadium of Light is Sunderland’s secret weapon

Home advantage is a huge thing in the Premier League, and that has been demonstrated by the opening results for Sunderland this season.

It wasn’t too long ago that the Black Cats went an entire calendar year without a win at home, to now, where they have not once looked like losing in the top flight.

The players deserve huge credit for that, but so do the fans, with their constant noise and energy doing plenty to encourage those on the pitch.

If Sunderland can keep this home form going and pick up points on the road as they did against Crystal Palace, relegation will not even be a concern.

A trip to face Nottingham Forest is up next for the Wearsiders, who will be looking to cause yet another upset.
