What Sunderland must do in transfer window after opening day win vs West Ham

Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League with an emphatic victory over West Ham.

Twelve new arrivals have checked in at the Stadium of Light this summer, and Sunderland have shown no signs of stopping there.

Nordi Mukiele is the latest arrival at Sunderland, joining on a four-year deal from Ligue 1 giants PSG.

Eight debutants featured in Sunderland’s 3-0 win over West Ham at the weekend, though the clash showcased what else the Black Cats need to do in the final fortnight of the transfer window.

Another wide attacker is an absolute must

Summer arrivals Chemsdine Talbi and Simon Adingra both registered an assist in Sunderland’s win over West Ham, though the lack of options after the pair is concerning.

Romaine Mundle is currently out injured, but he is one of only two other wingers at the Stadium of Light as things stand.

This seems to be an area that has been identified by Sunderland, who have since been linked with a move to sign Leicester winger Abdul Fatawu.

The Black Cats are said to have lodged a £28million bid for the 21-year-old, though the Foxes are likely to hold out for significantly more.

Jenson Seelt injury could force Sunderland into action

Jenson Seelt has had a fantastic summer at Sunderland, but he was forced off with an injury in the opening day clash against the Irons.

It is not believed to be a serious injury, but the Dutchman does have a history.

Mukiele and Omar Alderete will feature, as will new-born hero Dan Ballard, but one more may be needed in the next few weeks.

Sunderland have made an official bid for Jhon Lucumi, showcasing that it is an area that they are still looking to recruit in.

Regis Le Bris needs to trim his squad

While those 12 new arrivals were certainly needed this summer, only six of last year’s squad have departed the Stadium of Light.

Adil Aouchiche joined Aberdeen on loan earlier in the summer, while Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson both secured moves away from Wearside, joining Dortmund and Brighton respectively.

Names such as Alan Browne, Nectar Triantis, Dennis Cirkin and Arthur Masuaku were all absent from the matchday squad against Graham Potter’s side, showcasing the need for exits to be accelerated.

Several of these exits may be loans, but it is going to be crucial that some players are moved on to prevent the squad from being overcrowded.
