Sunderland have shortlisted ‘exceptional’ defender who Arthur Masuaku knows very well
Sunderland are in the market for a defender before the transfer window closes.
The backline is one of the few positions Regis Le Bris is yet to significantly strengthen despite his high spending this summer.
Now, with the injury to Dan Ballard at Sunderland, the need for a new centre-back has now increased.
Sunderland have placed a bid for Jhon Lucumi. However, the Black Cats have plenty of other stars on their shortlist.

Sunderland consider making offer for Nayef Aguerd
Nayef Aguerd has already been linked to Sunderland this transfer window.
The defender is currently at West Ham, and previously played with new signing Arthur Masuaku at the East London club.
Gary Lineker once hailed the centre-back as “exceptional” on Match of the Day on 4 February 2023 for his performance against Newcastle.
However, rumours had gone quiet regarding a potential Sunderland move for Aguerd until Wednesday.
- Aguerd has been at West Ham since 2022
- The centre-back was loaned out to Real Sociedad last season
- Aguerd has started every match for West Ham this season
According to Footmercato on 27 August, the Black Cats have the defender very high on their shortlist going into the final days of the window.
Marseille, Roma and AC Milan are also interested in the Moroccan international. However, a deal is yet to be struck.
Sunderland now intend to convince the centre-back to join Le Bris’ side, and could make an important financial offer to encourage the player to leave West Ham.

Nayef Aguerd isn’t good enough for Sunderland
While Aguerd has Premier League experience, his performances in recent weeks have proved that he is not good enough at this level.
The centre-back has started in the Hammers’ first three matches, with each ending in a defeat, including Sunderland’s 3-0 victory over West Ham.
Therefore, it would be bizarre if Le Bris targets Aguerd, who has been part of the worst in the Premier League so far this term.
Realistically, if the Black Cats are to avoid the drop, they need players on form, not defenders who are conceding goals with ease.
