View: Sunderland have ready made Anthony Patterson replacement in their academy
With Anthony Patterson likely to be the target of interest in January, Sunderland won’t need to look any further than their own academy to find his replacement in Matt Young.
Having already been linked with a move to Arsenal in January (TBR Football), Patterson is likely to be subject to transfer interest in January and the emergence of Young could ease concerns over the goalkeeping department.
Despite being just 17 years old, Young has already caught the eye and his loan spell at Salford has been of great benefit to the teen.
His double penalty save in the Bristol Street Motors trophy encounter against Wolves Under-21 showcased his ability as an excellent shot-stopper.
The goalkeeping department is a strength for Sunderland
One thing that has remained consistent over the years at Wearside is their ability to produce first-team quality ‘keepers. Patterson is the most recent to have made the step up, following the footsteps left by now England number one Jordan Pickford.
Patterson has excelled since breaking into the first team and his links with Premier League football are certainly warranted.
Young isn’t the only promising ‘keeper at the academy, with Dan Cameron another highly-rated prospect.

Simon Moore has stepped up in Patterson’s recent absence due to injury and hasn’t put a foot wrong, using his experience in the English game to his advantage and seemingly playing a huge role in the club off the pitch as well as contributing on it.
Young earned transfer interest himself last year, with iNews reporting that Manchester United and City had been keeping an eye on his development (October 2023) and his progress since may only intensify that interest.
