Sunderland ‘have perfect plan for Johnstone raid’ after confirmed Wolves exit

Sunderland are working hard to build a team capable of surviving in the Premier League after their remarkable playoff final victory.

The Mackems defied the odds to secure promotion from the Championship, but signings will be needed to keep them afloat.

There have been no confirmed transfers in the door yet, while star midfielder Jobe Bellingham has been sold, but there is plenty of time left before the new season begins.

Sunderland tipped to swoop for Sam Johnstone after Wolves update

Regis Le Bris could look to strengthen all over the field, and the Mackems will receive a huge financial stimulus to fund these transfers as a reward for their promotion.

Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is one player linked with a move to the North East.

According to Alan Nixon via the Sun on Sunday (15 June, page 55), Sunderland want to hire former Wolves goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler, now that he has exited Molineux.

And that could open the door for a bid for Johnstone.

The England international signed for Wolves last summer and worked with Cutler every day in training.

However, he has been unable to dislodge Jose Sa as the club’s number one and may be keen to seal a move ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

Sunderland need experience in all areas of the pitch

Le Bris has built a talented squad that performed exceptionally well for the majority of this season.

They defied expectations to reach the top six of the Championship, and despite a horrible run of form toward the end of the regular season, pulled themselves together in the playoffs to secure a place in the Premier League.

However, they’ll be mixing it with the giants of English football next season, and the Mackems squad looks noticeably short of Premier League experience.

This can be vital, especially during purple patches where the squad’s backs are against the wall. Le Bris will know these purple patches are coming.

A move for Johnstone would be a bright start to Sunderland’s transfer window. The 32-year-old has Premier League experience with Crystal Palace and West Brom, and he’s represented England on seven occasions as well.

A battle between Johnstone and Anthony Patterson for a starting place would be good for the club.
