Sunderland have fresh playoff hope as long-term absentee spotted back in training
Sunderland’s ever-growing injury list has taken its toll this season, but things seem to be improving on that front.
Ahead of Sunderland’s clash with Blackburn Rovers on Easter Monday, there is very little left at stake for either side.
Regis Le Bris’ side already know that their fate lies in the playoffs, while Blackburn’s season was completely derailed by the departure of John Eustace, who is doing a fine job at Derby County.
Sunderland’s main focus between now and then will be getting their squad back to full capacity, and as per the latest images released on X, things are looking promising.

Niall Huggins spotted back in training for Sunderland
You’d be forgiven for forgetting that Niall Huggins is still a Sunderland player, given the fact that his last appearance came in December 2023.
However, an image posted on the Sunderland X account shows the Welsh fullback in the gym with the first team as they prepare for their encounter with Blackburn.
Sunderland | Injury status |
Dan Ballard | Out |
Aji Alese | Out |
Niall Huggins | Out |
Dennis Cirkin | Out |
Jenson Seelt | Out |
Romaine Mundle | Out |
Ian Poveda | Out |
Now, it’s unlikely that he will be back in contention in the immediate future, but the fact that he is back involved in some capacity means there may be a slim chance of him featuring at some stage in the playoff campaign, thoughy that may still be wishful thinking.
Dan Ballard is another who has been pictured back in training after spending March on the sideline, and things are moving nicely for the Black Cats when it comes to their injury list.

Le Bris is doing the right thing at Sunderland
Form is important, but if Sunderland are to get promoted, maintaining player fitness will be the number one priority.
The Frenchman has already shown that to be his thinking ahead of the final few games, with his management of Enzo Le Fee and Jobe Bellingham serving as a showcase.
