‘Sunderland have done nothing wrong’ as new financial paperwork emerges, Tottenham did the same
A financial expert has dismissed anything problematic after the reveal of a recent move at Sunderland to boost finances.
The Black Cats spent heavily in the summer as they looked to make their return to the Premier League a long-term arrangement under Regis Le Bris.
A record summer outlay for a promoted side of £161.7 million signalled clear intent under the stewardship of Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and saw the likes of Habib Diarra and Simon Adingra arrive for big money.
It has so far paid off in a big way as Sunderland sit fourth after their late win at Chelsea last time out, and it has now emerged that the club have borrowed cash secured against future broadcast income in the top flight.

Kieran Maguire waves off any Sunderland financial impropriety
Football finance lecturer from the University of Liverpool Kieran Maguire shared documentation from Companies House via X indicating that Sunderland have borrowed from Macquarie Bank.
A fan suggested in the replies that rivals should be allowed to get away with debatable business moves while the ongoing wait for a resolution to Man City’s charges goes on.
But Maguire disagreed that there was anything untoward about what the Black Cats have done anyway, pointing to the fact that Tottenham have also made a similar move.
In response he wrote: “Sunderland have done nothing wrong, Spurs did similar recently.”

Black Cats look to be back in the Premier League for the long haul
On current evidence the club should be able to borrow against future top-flight broadcast money for some time into the future if they so wish.
There is obviously a long way to go yet but it would be a major collapse from here for Le Bris and his side to end up dropping back down to the Championship.
Huge risk is attached to spending so heavily in an attempt to avoid going straight back down but it increasingly looks to be the only way to even hope to succeed.
Three victories in four and what looks a winnable home fixture against Everton next up has hopes high at the Stadium of Light, and rightly so.
At a time when all three promoted sides are increasingly becoming the league’s whipping boys Sunderland, as things stand, are bucking the trend in a big way.
