Sunderland have Anthony Patterson replacement ready as exit draws closer

Sunderland will recall teenage keeper Matty Young if Anthony Patterson moves away on loan.

Patterson has been linked with an exit from Sunderland after failing to receive adequate minutes for the Black Cats this season.

Indeed, Robin Roefs’ arrival at Sunderland has seen Patterson demoted to a rotational role despite his heroics in their win against Sheffield United in the play-offs.

The 25-year-old has made one appearance for Regis Le Bris‘ side this season in the Carabao Cup, which saw Huddersfield Town kick Sunderland from the competition on penalties.

As a result, a winter exit to earn some much-needed minutes continues to be an attractive option.

Matty Young could be recalled from Salford

Young was loaned to League Two side Salford City to continue his development plan.

The 18-year-old is considered one of Sunderland’s most promising young talents and is starting consistently for the League Two club.

However, Sunderland are expected to recall Young if Patterson leaves on loan this winter window, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon on 16 November.

Their current second-choice keeper needs first-team action and could be headed for the Championship on loan.

Patterson has recently been linked with Leicester City, who are currently 12th in the Championship.

Indeed, the Foxes are in desperate need of reinforcements, and Patterson is best placed to come to their aid at the King Power.

The only concern that remains is whether recalling Young will curb his development, considering his solid start to life in League Two.

How has Matty Young performed for Salford?

The bright-eyed youngster has climbed up the ladder, starting 14 games for Salford this season.

He has conceded 17 goals in total and has kept three clean sheets in what has been an impressive display from the youngster.

Despite earning promotion to England’s Under-21s, Young recently pulled out of international duty to play in Salford’s 2-0 defeat to MK Dons on Saturday.

However, his stronger performances haven’t gone unnoticed by Sunderland and other Premier League sides, with Manchester City taking an interest in Young.

Continuing with the League Two side would be the better outcome for the promising young star. However, training with the first team and going on loan once more could also become a solid option.

Things change quickly in football, and he could even end up impressing Le Bris if he returns this winter.
