Sunderland have added incentive vs Everton after what David Moyes said at Stadium of Light
David Moyes is set to return to the Stadium of Light for the first time since his departure from Sunderland.
Sunderland are a club on the rise again this season, and with 17 points from their opening nine fixtures, supporters couldn’t ask for much more.
However, after years of suffering and neglect, there is still plenty of anger towards the fixtures that initially saw the Black Cats fall down the English pyramid.
Stewart Donald, Ellis Short and Michael Beale are all among the names that are resented by Sunderland supporters, and that feeling will emerge again on Monday night when Everton travel to the Stadium of Light.

David Moyes intiated Sunderland’s downfall
Let’s face it, Sunderland have had some horrendous managers over the years, though Moyes is often referred to as the one at the very top of that list.
After a successful season under Sam Allardyce, Moyes took over after the Englishman took the England job, and the warning signs were there from the start.
Moyes’ record at Sunderland
- 43 games in charge
- Eight wins
- Seven draws
- 28 defeats
- 18.6% win percentage
- 29 goals for (Premier League)
- 69 goals against (Premier League)
By August, Moyes had already tipped Sunderland for a relegation fight, with comments that immediately turned the support against him.
Via Sky Sports, he said: “I don’t think you can hide the facts, [relegation fight] will be the case, yes.
“People will be flat because they are hoping that something is going to dramatically change – it can’t dramatically change, it can’t.”
Relegation followed for the Black Cats, and they went down without a whimper.
Just 24 points were accumulated by Sunderland, who finished the season in 20th place.
What did David Moyes say after Sunderland got relegated?
To be honest, Moyes pointed the blame at everyone aside from himself, despite the fact that he was one of the biggest problems behind the relegation.
As quoted by the Guardian, Moyes said: “I don’t think this is the time to offer them a reason why, but they come here in their thousands week in week out and travel the country in their thousands as well.
“I’m so disappointed we couldn’t give them more. I know that cash isn’t always easy to come by in this part of the country, so I appreciate every penny they put into the club by watching the team. I hoped relegation would never come.”

Those comments, matched with the fact that he tipped his own side for a relegation battle, were the problem, with the character of the squad simply nonexistent.
“I know what a Premier League squad looks like and I’ve felt right from the start we’ve been a little short of the quality we need,” Moyes added, despite the fact he turned down the opportunity to sign the likes of Yann M’Vila and DeAndre Yedlin, and opted to bring in Darron Gibson and Donald Love instead.
Sunderland face Moyes’ Everton side on Monday night, and it will be the perfect opportunity for the Black Cats to exact some revenge on their former boss.
