Sunderland have 1999 omen in their favour ahead of Everton clash
Sunderland are gearing up to face Everton at the Stadium of Light on Monday.
Sunderland secured a momentous 2-1 victory against Chelsea last time out, with the Black Cats back on home soil on Monday night when they take on the Toffees.
David Moyes will return to the Stadium of Light for the first time since 2017, with Sunderland fans desperate to see their side get one over on the Scotsman.
Based on what happened 26 years ago, the odds may be in their favour to do so.
History could repeat itself at Stadium of Light
Sunderland are already looking safe from relegation; at least that is the general consenses from everyone that isnt a Mackem.
However, with 29 games still to be played, there is a long way to go, and Sunderland aren’t the favourites to beat Everton on Monday.
However, with 17 points from their first nine games, it is their best start to a campaign since 1999, and their fixture after led to success.
Sunderland secured a 4-0 victory at Bradford City in their 10th game of the season back then, and of course, Everton will be their 10th game of the season this time around.
If the Black Cats can repeat that result against the Toffees, they would be just five points away from matching the tally set by Leicester last season, when they finished 18th.
Sunderland vs Everton head-to-head
Sunderland have not had the best of luck against Everton through their recent encounters, with just four wins in the last 24 years.
The most recent triumph was back in 2015, when the Black Cats won 3-0 at the Stadium of Light courtesy of goals from Patrick van Aanholt and a brace from Lamine Kone.
With that said, Sunderland have had some memorable wins against Everton, with the first clash coming back in 1890.
Since then, the Black Cats have won on 83 occasions, with the Toffees tasting victory 71 times.
