Jenson Seelt returns to Sunderland training after long-term injury spell – report

Sunderland defender Jenson Seelt has been spotted on the grass for the first time since an injury in March ruled him out of contention, according to the Sunderland Echo.

The Dutchman signed for the club in 2023 and featured on several occasions, operating as a centre-back and right-back in different encounters.

The summer arrival of Chris Mepham means Seelt will not be required to be rushed back into action as Sunderland currently have plenty of cover in his position.

The report from the Sunderland Echo (16 October) states that it may be well into the autumn before Seelt returns to the matchday squad.

Jenson Seelt return will be a boost for Sunderland

His debut season at the club will somewhat be overshadowed by the fact the Wearsiders were almost drawn into a relegation battle however Seelt actually fared quite well in his first campaign in English football.

Dutch centre-backs have a perception of being very good on the ball and in his short spell in the squad, Seelt demonstrated that.

Seelt boasted a respectable 83.2% pass accuracy across 17 Championship appearances last season, according to FotMob.

Generally, Seelt dealt well with most attacks coming his way. He showcased a level of bravery required in England to win challenges and turn over possession in favour of his team.

Thankfully for the Black Cats, Luke O’Nien, Dan Ballard and Chris Mepham have all excelled in his absence with the latter often looking a level above most others at this level.

However, his return to first-team action will allow for more rotation and provide Regis Le Bris with another defensive option.
