Sunderland in talks with Jamie Vardy as transfer ‘very close’

Sunderland have just been handed a major update in their bid to sign Jamie Vardy this summer.

The Black Cats have already caught the eye with their spending over the last few weeks, but now it appears that they could be close to landing another big name ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Sunderland have recently agreed a deal to sign Granit Xhaka, with the former Arsenal man set to return to English football after two years away.

The Wearsiders are certainly causing a stir in the market this summer, and their window could now be about to get even better.

Sunderland in talks with Vardy as striker ‘very close’ to transfer

Sunderland have shown an interest in signing Vardy already this summer, as they bid to add proven Premier League experience at the top of the pitch.

The 38-year-old has over 140 goals to his name across a decade spent in the top flight, and he is now a free agent having recently left Leicester City.

The former England international is understood to be “very close” to agreeing to return to the Premier League, according to reports from Fichajes (27 July).

Sunderland are currently in talks with the veteran about a move to the Stadium of Light, while Everton and Wolves have also made enquiries to the striker.

The Black Cats are believed to have made a proposal to Vardy and his camp, which would guarantee him regular minutes and a central role in their team.

However, at this moment in time, it is Everton and David Moyes who are described as the club who are showing the most serious initiative to get a deal over the line.

Sunderland are right to target experience

Sunderland are seemingly set to add Xhaka to their ranks imminently, and with Vardy now potentially set to follow shortly, there has been a clear change of stance from the Wearsiders.

The majority of their activity in the market up until now has focused on promising younger talents from other European leagues.

However, now they are consistently being linked with players who have a proven track record in the Premier League.

The likes of Xhaka and Vardy are players who would be capable of playing major leadership roles within Regis Le Bris’ side, and their level of experience could be invaluable in their fight to avoid the drop.

It remains to be seen whether the Mackems’ proposal will be enough to convince Vardy to make the switch to the North East, but they have gone about it in the right manner by promising a big role to the 38-year-old.

If they could agree on a deal to bring him in, it may well become the highlight of their busy summer of business.
