Sunderland ‘get choice of two Premier League goalkeepers’ after Petrovic snub

Sunderland are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer as they prepare for Premier League football.

Anthony Patterson was a solid performer last season, but the Black Cats are keen on signing a goalkeeper who can provide an instant impact with top-flight experience under his belt.

Sunderland have spent heavily in the transfer window so far, and this could be set to continue as further reinforcements are targeted all over the pitch.

Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic was targeted for a move, but he will now move to Bournemouth, as two alternative options have presented themselves to Sunderland.

Sunderland can sign Aaron Ramsdale or Sam Johnstone

Sunderland need a goalkeeper who is ready to play in the Premier League, and two experienced options have now emerged.

TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has claimed that Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone are being considered as Petrovic completes his move to Bournemouth.

Ramsdale is set to leave Southampton following their relegation last season, while Johnstone has fallen down the pecking order at Wolves.

Both are England internationals with a lot of experience, and Sunderland now have a decision to make with both fairly attainable this summer.

Ramsdale could be better than Johnstone for Sunderland

While Ramsdale has suffered several relegations in his career, the 26-year-old is coming into his prime years with bags of experience at Bournemouth, Sheffield United, Arsenal and Southampton under his belt.

Ramsdale challenged for the title with Arsenal before losing his place to David Raya, but in a stable environment, he could hit his best form.

Johnstone joined Wolves last year, but the 32-year-old suffered a huge dip in form before he was dropped, and is clearly in decline.

Ramsdale may cost more now, but would arrive as a potential long-term option with more resale value, and the potential to hit a higher ceiling.

Sunderland’s policy has been to sign younger players, with Jordan Henderson currently not being considered for a move, and this may even put them off both goalkeepers.

However, Ramsdale is still relatively young for his position, and could establish himself as a number one for years to come, while Johnstone would be a surprising addition given the doubts over whether he can find his best form again.
