Sunderland get away with one as ex-FIFA official reacts to scenes vs Nottingham Forest

Sunderland have enjoyed a phenomenal first half against Nottingham Forest as they seek their first away win of the season.

Jeff Stelling tipped Sunderland to struggle at the City Ground, but they went in at half-time with a 1-0 advantage thanks to Omar Alderete.

Alderete’s headed effort was the Black Cats’ first away goal of the campaign, and they will now be striving for all three points.

It has been an opening 45 packed with drama, with one particular incident coming into question in the East Midlands.

Keith Hackett reacts to incident involving Trai Hume and Nicolas Dominguez

Sunderland were buoyed by Nottingham Forest’s injury blows, with Murillo and Douglas Luiz both absent for the Tricky Trees.

It was a first half lacking in real quality, but there were several controversial moments between the two Premier League teams.

Indeed, there was one bizarre flashpoint, as Dominguez was booked for the home side after a slight coming together with Hume, which was put down as simulation.

Sunderland scored from the free-kick in question, leaving Forest’s player furious.

Now, Hackett – speaking exclusively to Mackem News – has provided his insight on the incident.

“This is two players clearly attempting to play the ball, and I find it difficult to see and understand why the Nottingham Forest player was both penalised and then issued with a yellow card,” he said.

“Forest have every right to be aggrieved with this decision.”

Sunderland deserving of early lead vs Nottingham Forest

Arthur Masuaku has endured a tough first half for Sunderland, but other than that, it is hard to fault Le Bris’ side.

As expected, the Wearsiders have had low possession, but they have made their chances count at the City Ground.

Top goalscorer Wilson Isidor missed a glaring chance in the opening period, steering his effort narrowly wide of Matz Sells’ post.

Then, Alderete gave Sunderland a deserved lead from a free-kick with his headed goal stemming from a fine run in behind the Forest backline.

If it stays as it is, then the Black Cats will walk away from the East Midlands with their third win of the season.
