Sunderland ‘frustrated’ with what has happened with Matt Young at Salford

Matty Young is currently out on loan at Salford, though Sunderland will surely be frustrated with how the situation has panned out.

Goalkeeping has been the talk of the town at Sunderland as of late, with the performances of Anthony Patterson coming under heavy scrutiny.

The Black Cats’ shot-stopper has been at blame for the last two goals Sunderland have conceded, including the winning goal in the defeat to Leeds United, followed by the same at home to Hull City.

Several fans were keen on seeing Young return to Sunderland in the winter to compete with Patterson, but the youngster remained with Salford, and that decision is surely going to cause frustration now.

Salford treatment of Young has been poor

Sunderland have sent several players out on loan this season with a view of getting them regular first-team minutes, and it appeared they had succeeded with the deal involving Young and Salford.

Young has made 10 first-team appearances for Salford, one of which was in the FA Cup away to Manchester City, and for the large part, he has impressed.

However, since the end of the transfer window, he hasn’t played a minute, and it raises the question as to how the remainder of the season will pan out.

On Salford’s part, it is very poor management of him to drop him after such an impressive run of form, just as the option to recall him was diminishing for the Black Cats.

Sunderland will feel very frustrated as it appears their trust has been misplaced in a crucial period in Young’s career.

Sunderland may have ‘keeper conundrum this summer

With Patterson failing to impress as of late, if that form continues through to the summer, questions will emerge about his ability to be the starting goalkeeper, regardless of which league they are in.

Young may be afforded a chance if the Black Cats remain in the Championship, while it would be unlikely if they are to be successful in their push for promotion.

It is certainly an area that will be debated ahead of the summer transfer window, but for now, the focus will be on matters on the pitch.
