Sunderland fans will really love Omar Alderete’s comparison to World Cup-winning defender
Regis Le Bris has been heavily backed in the transfer market by Sunderland this summer.
Sunderland have had 10 new arrivals check in at the Stadium of Light so far this window, with the signing of Arthur Masuaku the latest.
The Black Cats have added a blend of youth with experience to the squad that achieved promotion from the Championship last season, as they prepare for a new life back in the top flight.
Added to that, the Wearsiders are closing in on summer signing number 11, after a deal was struck to sign Getafe’s Omar Alderete.

Alderete earns rave reviews ahead of Sunderland transfer
Alderete looks likely to be a bargain signing for Sunderland, who have been in desperate need of defensive reinforcements all summer.
The additions of Reinildo and Masuaku have somewhat subdued some of those concerns, but it remains evident that a new centre-back or two would be needed, and Alderete will be their man.
- Made 263 career appearances
- Immense leadership skills and experience
- Regular starter in La Liga
- Strong defensively
At 28 years old, Alderete boasts an immense amount of experience and leadership qualities, which will be crucial in Sunderland’s fight against relegation, and the Paraguayan has even been compared to Sergio Ramos, who won the World Cup with Spain back in 2010.
In quotes shared by AS, Luis Suarez, the physical trainer at Basil, said: “He’s very strong, powerful and fast. It’s difficult for attackers to outrun him.
“He’s very tough and aggressive in duels. He’s afraid of nothing. If he has to die, he dies.
His leadership and aggressiveness in duels reminds me of Sergio Ramos. I remember when I was a kid, they would box Ramos in with four or five other kids and he’d come out butting heads. Omar is like that.”

Who else could Sunderland sign this summer?
After Alderete, Sunderland may very well still be in the market for another centre-back, though it is likely to be a right-footed one if anything.
Another midfielder could arrive after the Black Cats were linked with Matt O’Riley, while the addition of another forward remains crucial.
Le Bris has been backed by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus this summer, and will continue to do so right up until the deadline on 1 September.
