Sunderland fans will love what Matt Young has just done away from Stadium of Light

Matt Young is now well into his second season on loan from Sunderland at Salford City and is continuing to perform.

Young spent the 2024-25 campaign at Salford and returned to the Ammies over the summer to continue his development in a familiar environment.

Last season, the 19-year-old made 20 League Two appearances as Karl Robinson’s side missed out on the play-offs by a single point.

This term, Young has started all but two of Salford’s 19 fourth-tier games, keeping three clean sheets and maintaining a save percentage of 66.7 per cent

On Tuesday evening, Young played the full 90 minutes as Salford conceded late on to draw 1-1 away at Fleetwood.

Robinson’s side opened the scoring in the 26th through Kelly N’Mai and remarkably it was the Sunderland loanee who grabbed the assist, from his own box.

Benefitting from a defensive mix-up, Young’s clearance bounced all the way through to N’Mai, who made no mistake with the finish.

The teenager eventually had to pick the ball out of his own net, though, as Mathew Virtue-Thick headed Fleetwood level.

Young had made a smart initial save down to his left, but the ball bounced straight to Virtue-Thick, who couldn’t miss from five yards out.

Sunderland could yet recall Matt Young

Despite the fact that he is enjoying an impressive season on loan at Salford, Young could be recalled by Sunderland in January.

It comes amid rumours that Anthony Patterson may be set for a Stadium of Light exit, which would leave the Black Cats short in the goalkeeping department.

However, if he did come back to Sunderland, Young would be very much consigned to the bench with Robin Roefs in such good form.

The lack of minutes could be damaging to the shot-stopper’s development and would be far from ideal at such an important stage of his career.

If Patterson does depart in January, then Regis Le Bris’ side should be bringing in a more senior backup keeper, rather than recalling Young and halting his progress at Salford.
