Sunderland fans slam ‘baffling’ decision amid Jordan Henderson latest

Sunderland were linked with a move for former academy graduate Jordan Henderson as it became clear he was leaving Ajax in recent weeks.

Henderson came through the ranks at Sunderland before eventually moving to Liverpool, whom he captained as they won several major trophies.

The England international could have returned to Sunderland this summer as he departed Ajax on a free transfer, but has now agreed a move elsewhere.

The Black Cats have made several ambitious signings this summer, but did not make any attempt to bring Henderson back, and fans are dismayed at this decision.

Sunderland fans wanted Henderson back as Brentford deal agreed

Henderson has now agreed a two-year deal at Premier League rivals Brentford, who are likely to directly compete with Sunderland in the fight to survive.

Sunderland’s transfer policy has been to focus on younger players, but fans are dismayed that a heroes return to the Stadium of Light was not on the cards for the 35-year-old.

Fans have now taken to X to express their disappointment, given that Henderson’s experience could have been helpful for them in their return to the top flight.

Henderson’s experience could have been useful

While signing the veteran may not have aligned with the club’s policy, he could have been the perfect leader for this young squad.

Sunderland face a tough battle to compete in the Premier League, and very few of their players have any top flight experience under their belts.

Henderson could have joined as a squad player and a natural leader, and someone who could have proved extremely useful over the course of the season.

Brentford will now benefit from his character and mentality, but Sunderland will hope that the players they have signed provide enough quality to get them clear of the relegation zone.

Both clubs are expected to be in and around the relegation battle, with the promoted sides all struggling in recent years, while Brentford have lost manager Thomas Frank, captain Christian Norgaard and could lose top scorers Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa.
