Sunderland fans ‘risk ridicule’ after what happened in Swansea defeat

Sunderland have nothing left to play for until the playoffs, though that won’t be enough to excuse the actions of a minority of supporters.

While it was only officially confirmed with the recent draw to Norwich City, Sunderland have been aware for a while now that their fate will lie in the playoffs.

Dating back to the defeat to Leeds United, it seemed fairly evident that Sunderland had fallen out of the race with a top two finish, with performances since then also showcasing that.

The defeat to Swansea was a painful one, more so because the performance was dire, but also because of the atmosphere created by a very small segment of the home support.

Tommy Watson/Salis Samed booed by Sunderland fans

Tommy Watson has been hitting the headlines as of late because of his move to Brighton, which has already been confirmed ahead of the summer transfer window.

Since then, Sunderland fans have questioned why he is still playing for the club despite the knowledge that he will not be here next season.

In turn, that led to a small minority of fans booing him when he was withdrawn as a second-half substitute in the defeat to Swansea, though he wasn’t the only one.

Salis Samed was also introduced into the game, with a few audible boos heard around the Stadium of Light, and it just seems baffling.

Sunderland are enjoying a magnificent season on all accounts, and booing your own players is not going to serve as a benefit to their hopes of achieving promotion back to the Premier League.

While performances need to improve, everyone needs to be on the same page ahead of the final month of the season.

Sunderland are seven games away from Premier League football

Once again, this is a minority of supporters, but the reaction of some would make you question that Sunderland are actually fourth in the Championship, and on course for their best league finish since their relegation from the Premier League.

Recent performances have left a lot to be desired, but there is very little to be negative about currently.

These players need the backing of their supporters, and by doing so, it could provide Sunderland with the edge to achieve a return to the Premier League.
